Congkak: how to play, where it comes from, and how to win

Congkak is the Malay world's version of mancala — the oldest and most widespread family of board games there is. Two rows of houses, a storehouse at each end, and a handful of seeds in every hole.
A turn is simple: scoop up all the seeds from one of your houses and sow them one at a time into the following holes, dropping one in your own store and skipping your opponent's. Everything then depends on where the last seed falls. In your store, you go again. In an empty house on your side, you capture it and everything opposite. And in true congkak — unlike the simplified Kalah sold in Western shops — landing in an occupied house means you pick those seeds up and keep going, a relay that can run for several laps.
That relay is what makes congkak a calculation game rather than a guessing one. There is no luck at all: every position is visible and every move is countable, and the better counter wins almost every time. The Malay word congak means mental arithmetic, which fits exactly.
How to play
Sow the seeds clockwise, take another turn when the last seed lands in your store, and capture the pile opposite when it lands in an empty house of yours — plus how congkak differs from Kalah.

Common questions
How many seeds does congkak use?
Usually seven in each of the fourteen houses — 98 in total on the standard board. Five-house boards with five seeds each make for a quicker game.
What is the difference between congkak and Kalah?
The relay rule. In congkak, a last seed landing in an occupied house means you scoop up those seeds and continue sowing. In Kalah the turn ends, which makes it a much shallower game.
How do you capture in congkak?
By ending your sowing in an empty house on your own side. You take that seed and everything in the house directly opposite. If the opposite house is empty, nothing is captured.
Is congkak a game of luck?
None at all. Everything is visible and every move is calculable, which is why experienced players beat beginners so comprehensively.
Is congkak the same as sungka?
Nearly. Sungka is the Philippine version and congklak or dakon the Indonesian names. All belong to the mancala family and differ only in details.
